Are you ever in a situation where you want to say something in English but you don’t have the right words and phrases? Well, this ‘clothes conversation lesson’ focuses on how to return clothes to a shop and it’ll give you some natural language for describing problems with clothes so you won’t feel stuck the next time you’re in that situation.
By the end of this lesson, you’ll have some great new phrases and you’ll have practised speaking too!
First read the clothes conversation and then answer the questions below
- What does the customer want to return?
- Is the item faulty?
- Does the customer get a refund? Why/Why not?
- Is the customer happy with the result of the conversation?
Look at the reasons you might return clothes. Do you understand the meanings?
“I’d like to return this / bring this back please” (Bring something back is a lovely phrasal verb to describe returning something to a shop)
- I didn’t try it on and it’s the wrong size
- It doesn’t suit me
- It doesn’t fit me
- It’s got a hole in it
- It’s too + adjective (e.g. It’s too small)
- It’s not + adjective + enough (e.g. It’s not big enough)
Once you feel confident about those meanings, add any new vocabulary to your notebook!
Now go back to the clothes conversation. How do you pronounce the words in orange?
- jumper
- suit
- receipt
- refund (n)
- exchange (n)
- choose

Thank you Nicki! As I am advanced student I didn’t find new vocabulary. However, the pronunciation of SUIT and RECEIPT is always confusing for me, especially for the American English influence on TV shows.
