One of the most enjoyable ways to learn new vocabulary and practise your listening skills is to watch films!
If you want to hear a range of British accents you’re in the right place because today I’m sharing 10 of my favourite films with British accents!

Films with British accents
In no particular order, I can highly recommend….
4 WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL
This is pretty old now but it still works, and anything with Hugh Grant is about as British as you can get! It’s a classic Rom-Com so you can expect lots of laughs and romance.
TRAINSPOTTING
This one is set in Scotland so you’ll get to hear some great Scottish accents. There’s a lot of slang making it pretty challenging (even I struggle to understand at points) so definitely one for advanced English learners. It’s about drug addicts so stay away if that topic doesn’t appeal to you but it’s a cult classic.
THE KING’S SPEECH
You can kill two birds with one stone with this film – You can hear British accents and learn a bit about British history at the same time. It’s a lovely, heart-warming film with the talented Colin Firth.
THE FULL MONTY
Hilarious, touching and down to earth. The Full Monty is set in Sheffield so there’ll be some accents you’re not used to, which is a great way to challenge your listening skills. It’s about 6 unemployed men who decide to strip to make money, despite not being ‘typical’ strippers. I can’t recommend this one enough. It’s gold!
ENOLA HOLMES
I’ve just watched this on Netflix and I loved it. Enola is Sherlock Holmes’s little sister and her Mum has gone missing so she has to do some detective work of her own. It’s set in olden-day London and it’s action-packed while being delightfully sweet too!
THE COMMITMENTS
I simply LOVE this film. It’s set in the rough streets of Dublin, and a group of working-class unexperienced musicians get together to form an Irish soul band. It’s funny, the music is amazing and the characters are brilliant – What’s not to love?!
SLIDING DOORS
The concept for this is so clever. How would your life have turned out differently? It’s set in London, Gweneth Paltrow’s English accent is fantastic and the lead man is played by a brilliant Scottish actor, John Hannah. Give this one a try if you like a gentle romance.
HOT FUZZ
Simon Pegg and Nick Frost made a few funny British films together. They are a bit quirky and unexpected but if you want to try something a bit different, give this one a go!
PADDINGTON BEAR
Based on the popular children’s books, Paddington Bear is a sweet comedy about a bear who ends up in London. If you want something you can watch with the whole family, this is really great!
LOCK STOCK AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS
Guy Richie makes these gritty London action films combined with humour. There’s quite a few of them but this is one of my favourites, mainly because Vinnie Jones is a legend! But don’t watch it if you don’t like violence!
So there’s my list! Oh, and another thing to mention is films are brilliant for making small talk. You can find some great film vocabulary here.

I’ve watched Trainspotting, The full monty, The king’s speech, and Enola Holmes. “The full monty” was the best for me. I really enjoyed it!
I’d like to watch it again without Korean subtitles.
