13 ways to describe your job situation

If you’ve ever got stuck just trying to answer this simple question ‘What do you do?’, then make sure you watch this English lesson! It’ll give you some great, natural phrases and lots of pronunciation practice. Make sure you write the new vocabulary down in your notebook too!

If you simply want to tell somebody what you do, say:

• I’m + a/an + job title (I’m a teacher / I’m an accountant)

Or you can tell them where you work:

• I work in a + place (I work in a bank)

If your company is famous, you might say:

• I work for + name of company (I work for Google)

If you have your own company, you can say:

• I work for myself
• I’m self-employed
• I’ve got my own company

If you don’t have a job at the moment, you can say:

• I’m looking for a job
• I’m unemployed
• I’m between jobs

If your boss tells you that you have to leave your job because of bad behaviour, you can say:

• I was fired / sacked
• I got fired / sacked (informal)

If the company has to reduce the number of staff and you lose your job, you can say:

• I was let go
• I was made redundant

If you decide to stop working because you are in your sixties (or you have enough money!), you can say:

• I’m retired!
